One day at a time.

There is something different about seeing a full moon hanging over the horizon as summer begins giving way to fall.

The Harvest Moon has traditionally marked a time of gathering. Crops that had been planted months before were finally ready. The work of one season had reached its conclusion.

But there is another side to the harvest that I think we sometimes overlook.

A harvest isn’t only an ending.

It means a new season is beginning.

And maybe that’s why the Harvest Moon feels especially meaningful to me this year.

The Season That Was

We spend so much of our lives looking toward what comes next that we rarely stop to acknowledge everything it took to get here.

Think about a field before the harvest.

There were months when nothing was visible.

Seeds were buried beneath the ground.

There were storms.

There were days of intense heat.

There were probably moments when someone looked across that field and wondered whether anything was actually growing.

But underneath the surface, something was happening.

Life can feel a lot like that.

There are seasons when we’re working, struggling, healing, learning and changing without being able to see where any of it is leading.

Sometimes life changes suddenly. Sometimes the path we thought we were walking disappears completely.

And sometimes we’re simply asked to keep going without knowing what waits beyond the next turn.

Those seasons can feel endless when we’re living through them.

But eventually, something changes.

You look around and realize you’re no longer standing where you started.

The Harvest

Harvest doesn’t mean everything that happened during the season was good.

It means something came from it.

Maybe you learned what matters.

Maybe you discovered what doesn’t.

Maybe you became stronger.

Maybe you became softer.

Maybe you learned to ask for help.

Maybe you discovered that something you thought defined you was only one chapter of your story.

And sometimes the harvest is simply realizing:

I’m still here.

There is something powerful about recognizing that.

Not because every problem has disappeared or because the road ahead suddenly makes sense.

But because you’ve made it far enough to stand at the edge of another season.

And that deserves gratitude.

A New Season

Autumn reminds us that change doesn’t always need to be feared.

The trees don’t fight to keep every leaf.

The daylight changes.

The temperature drops.

The landscape transforms.

Nature doesn’t treat change as failure.

It treats change as part of the cycle.

Maybe we can learn something from that.

There are chapters of our lives that we’re supposed to outgrow.

There are identities we’re allowed to leave behind.

There are things we once thought we’d carry forever that eventually need to be put down.

And there are stories waiting for us that we couldn’t have imagined when the previous chapter began.

We don’t have to know exactly what those stories will look like.

That’s the difficult part.

And maybe that’s also the beautiful part.

One Day at a Time

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the future.

Most of us do.

What happens next?

Where will this lead?

Will everything be okay?

But the future has never asked us to live it all at once.

Tomorrow will arrive when it arrives.

Today only asks us to live today.

Wake up.

Put your feet on the ground.

Be grateful that another morning came.

Take care of yourself.

Show up for the people who matter.

Do the work in front of you.

Take another step.

And when tomorrow becomes today, do it again.

There is an incredible amount of peace in realizing that you don’t need the entire map.

You only need enough light for the next step.

Under the Harvest Moon

Maybe that’s what I’ll take from the Harvest Moon this year.

Not some promise that everything ahead will be easy.

Not the idea that every difficult chapter has suddenly been wrapped up neatly.

Something much simpler.

One season happened.

It changed me.

There were things planted that grew.

There were storms that had to be endured.

There were things lost along the way.

There were things found that I never expected to find.

And now another season is beginning.

There will be new stories.

New challenges.

New people.

New lessons.

New mornings I haven’t seen yet.

I don’t know exactly what waits in all of them.

I don’t need to.

For now, I can look at the moon hanging over the trees, recognize everything it took to arrive here, and be grateful that another day has dawned.

Then I’ll take the next step.

One day at a time.

Because the harvest isn’t the end of the story.

It’s proof that one season has passed—and an invitation to begin another.

Endure the shadows.
Welcome the new season.
Ascend with purpose.
